Our two-night stay using Hilton Free Night Rewards: the suite upgrade, restaurants, pools, beach conditions and booking options.

Waldorf Astoria Riviera Maya is an all-inclusive beachfront resort on Mexico’s Caribbean coast, south of Cancún and near Cancún International Airport. The resort switched to all-inclusive on Oct. 1, 2026, and will welcome only guests 18 and older beginning Jan. 10, 2027.
Dining was one of the highlights of our stay. Malpeque focused on seafood and live-fire cooking, while JA’O served Mexican dishes such as tlayuda and quesabirria. We had breakfast and lunch at Chaya and included drinks at Peacock Alley. Our meals were great, with a fine dining feel, and staff were clear when a premium selection carried a supplement.
We visited for two nights in late October using Hilton Free Night Rewards and received a complimentary suite upgrade with Diamond status. The spacious suite, attentive concierge, consistently friendly staff and recognition of our special occasion helped make the stay memorable. The pool was relaxed, with plenty of regular loungers during shoulder season. Ocean swimming was unavailable during our visit because of a red flag warning and sargassum seaweed.

Our score: 9.2 out of 10. The seven numeric experience ratings are weighted equally. Certificate value is assessed separately. Pool crowd levels reflect a shoulder-season visit. Compare your cash rate, points cost or certificate options separately when deciding whether to book.

The taxi cost us $65, which felt steep for a hotel so close to the airport. I tried requesting an Uber three times and couldn’t get a driver to accept. For a future stay, I’d check the hotel’s current transfer offers and compare the total with a prebooked ride.
We expected the drive to take about 15 minutes. An accident on the road turned it into roughly an hour. That was a reminder to leave extra time, especially when heading back for a flight.
Our concierge walked us to the room, gave us a tour and checked in throughout the stay to see whether we needed anything. That attention made the stay feel personal.
The service was a highlight of our stay. Everyone we encountered was friendly, and staff greeted us in the hallways. Those small interactions made the property feel welcoming throughout the visit.
The hotel also acknowledged our special occasion, which added a personal touch. If you’re visiting for a celebration, let the hotel team know in advance and discuss any arrangements you would like.

We booked a standard room, held Hilton Honors Diamond status and received a complimentary suite upgrade. The suite was spacious and comfortable, with plenty of room to spread out. I’d give the room a 9 out of 10: a very good room, though it did not feel exceptionally luxurious.
Our experience reflects the suite we received. A suite upgrade is not guaranteed, so book a room category you would be happy to stay in and treat any upgrade as an extra. If a particular layout is important to your trip, reserve that category.

There were plenty of regular loungers during our stay. We did not need to wake up early or compete for a chair, which made the pool experience feel relaxed.
The resort was quiet during our late October shoulder-season visit. I would expect a different level of demand during peak travel periods, so this experience should be read in that seasonal context.
Cabanas cost extra when used early in the day during our stay. Confirm current cabana fees with the pool staff; regular loungers were readily available when we visited.

The pool menu offered plenty of choice: tuna, tempura shrimp and grilled sea bass tacos, along with a beef burger, an Angus beef pepito sandwich and an Argentine choripan. There were also chicken and vegan taco options, sides and desserts.
The drinks menu included zero-proof drinks such as the Tulum Cooler and Purple Chetumal, smoothies, a Watermelon Martini and a make-your-own margarita selection. The range gives you options for a meal or drinks by the pool.
These are the menus we photographed during our stay. Their printed prices do not, by themselves, identify which items carry a supplement under an all-inclusive reservation. Confirm any premium selection before ordering.

The beach was not usable for swimming during our stay because of a red flag warning and sargassum seaweed. We could not swim in the ocean, which was a drawback for this visit.
Beach conditions can vary. If ocean swimming is a priority, check the beach flags and seaweed conditions during your visit rather than assuming a beachfront resort will have swimmable water.
Breakfast at Chaya was very good, with plenty of menu choices and the flexibility to order a full meal. I’d rate it an 8 out of 10. We enjoyed the food and variety, though the ingredients did not feel especially premium.
We ordered a fruit plate, an avocado parfait, an acai bowl, a quesadilla and traditional chilaquiles, along with ham, bacon, juice and cappuccinos. Our order was covered by the all-inclusive package, including the items on the printed restaurant check. We did not pay an additional breakfast bill.

Chaya also worked well for a sit-down lunch. One meal included guacamole, sea bass and citrus ceviche, scallop ceviche, Yucatecan suckling pig and Mayan octopus, with baby corn ribs and Brussels sprouts on the side.
At another meal, we ordered seafood linguine, roasted catch of the day and shrimp in a corn crust. The presentation and range of dishes added to the restaurant feel of the stay. These meals were also covered by our all-inclusive package.

Dinner was one of the strongest parts of our stay. Everything we ordered was great, and the experience felt like dining at a fine dining restaurant. Having those meals covered by the all-inclusive package was a highlight.
The two main dinner restaurants gave us different experiences: Malpeque centered on seafood and live-fire cooking, while JA’O served Mexican dishes that worked well for sharing.
Malpeque is the resort’s signature dinner restaurant, with an open kitchen and a focus on seafood and fire. The seafood display on ice set the tone before the meal.
Our order included oysters, clams and jumbo shrimp, along with corn soup, avocado tartare, yellowfin tuna and scallop ceviche. For larger plates, we had black linguine with clams and catch of the day. The selection let us try several seafood preparations in one meal.
We also ordered two plated desserts, Land of Mist and Peel and Salt. The seafood spread, individual dishes and desserts made this feel like a dinner we would plan an evening around.

Our meal was included. Tasting menus, wine pairings and other specialty selections can have separate conditions, so confirm any supplement before ordering.

JA’O takes inspiration from a Mexican cantina. We ordered a tuna tostada, a rib-eye tlayuda, forest mushroom ceviche and quesabirria served with its broth. Our meal also included octopus, rib-eye steak, shrimp and barbacoa short ribs.
We finished with red velvet churros. The mix of shareable starters, meat and seafood gave us plenty to try, and the whole meal was covered by the all-inclusive package. We enjoyed the food here as much as the more seafood-focused direction at Malpeque.

Restaurants still presented itemized checks with printed menu prices and totals. The meals shown here were covered by our all-inclusive package; those totals were not additional restaurant bills.
Included dining does not mean every premium bottle, tasting menu or specialty option is covered. Staff were good about explaining supplements during our stay. Browse the resort’s menus and guest guide for the available venues and dishes.
At Peacock Alley, we enjoyed the included drinks. Staff were good about telling us which premium spirits and other selections carried an extra charge before we ordered.
We appreciated knowing the charge before deciding whether to order something extra.
If you have a favorite spirit or wine, ask whether it is included and confirm the charge before ordering. The included drinks were a useful part of our experience without needing to move into the extra-cost selections.

The core package includes meals at participating restaurants, selected alcoholic and nonalcoholic drinks, 24-hour in-room dining and a minibar refreshed daily. Taxes, service charges and gratuities are included. Specialty selections and experiences can carry additional charges.
Airport transfers and other promotional extras can change. Check current resort offers and the inclusions for your exact rate before booking. Confirm any minimum-stay, booking-channel and advance-arrangement requirements directly with the hotel.
Compare the inclusions on the actual rate you are reserving. A points stay and a qualifying paid stay may include different extras.

Sebby's take: Despite a hefty annual fee, you get up to $3,500 in credits that help offset this. The card is great for people who benefit from lounge access, travel protections, and access to programs like Fine Hotels & Resorts.

For me, the biggest strengths were the friendly staff, the food and the relaxed pool scene. Our upgraded suite gave us plenty of space, although the room itself did not feel exceptionally luxurious. I’d weigh those strengths against the beach conditions and the total rate for your dates.
The main considerations are the total rate, beach conditions, the dinner variety for the length of your trip and which premium selections cost extra. Ocean swimming was unavailable during our stay because of a red flag warning and sargassum. Starting Jan. 10, 2027, the resort’s 18-and-older policy also makes it an option specifically for adult travelers. Choose a room you are happy with at booking and compare cash, points and qualifying card benefits before committing.
Yes. The resort transitioned to all-inclusive on Oct. 1, 2026. Participating dining venues, selected drinks, in-room dining and a daily refreshed minibar are included. Some premium selections and experiences cost extra.
Beginning Jan. 10, 2027, the resort welcomes registered guests 18 and older. It is not yet adults-only before that date.
We had breakfast at Chaya and could order broadly from the menu. Our order was covered by the all-inclusive package, even though the restaurant check showed itemized menu prices. Confirm any specialty-item supplements with your server.
Malpeque focuses on seafood and live-fire cooking. We ordered oysters, clams, shrimp, black linguine and other dishes there. JA’O serves Mexican dishes; our meal included a tuna tostada, tlayuda, quesabirria and red velvet churros. We enjoyed both dinners, and our meals were covered by the all-inclusive package.
Included selections were available during our stay, but certain top-shelf choices carried a supplement. Staff were good about telling us when an order would cost extra.
Check the current promotion and the inclusions for your exact reservation. Airport transfer offers, minimum stays, advance-arrangement requirements and award-stay eligibility can change. We paid $65 for a taxi during our two-night certificate stay; transportation fares can also change.
Compare Amex Platinum’s qualifying Fine Hotels + Resorts rate with a direct Hilton rate and a Hilton Honors reward stay. Platinum can add useful booking benefits, while Surpass and Aspire reward eligible direct Hilton purchases. The best choice depends on the total price, available credits and benefits you will use. In our November 2026 calendar, many dates showed Standard Room Rewards at 140,000 Hilton Honors points per night. Other dates showed Premium Room Rewards at 355,000 points or were sold out. Pricing and availability vary. The screenshot has Use Points & Money selected, so confirm the final points and cash requirements. We used certificates for our stay.
Yes, on our stay. Our two-night Free Night Reward reservation covered the room and all-inclusive package with $0 out of pocket and no resort fee. Airport transportation and optional extras were separate.
Hilton waives resort fees on qualifying reward stays booked entirely with points or with promotional Free Night Rewards. Our certificate stay had no resort fee. This does not cover optional purchases such as premium selections, cabanas or airport transportation.
We could not swim in the ocean during our stay because of a red flag warning and sargassum seaweed. Conditions can vary, so check beach flags and seaweed conditions during your visit.
We thought the food was great, with a fine dining feel at Malpeque and JA’O. Our restaurant meals, including breakfast and lunch at Chaya, were covered by the all-inclusive package. Certain premium selections can cost extra.
Not necessarily. Our restaurant checks showed itemized prices and totals, but the meals shown in this report were covered by the all-inclusive package. Certain premium selections can cost extra, so confirm any supplement before ordering.
